Open the application using the shortcut placed in the Programs section of your Start menu. The application may take a couple of seconds to load, but don't worry about the speed; once the windows are open the application runs quite quickly. If you are viewing this tutorial online, arrange this window and the Debrief window so that both are visible (although you may need to let them overlap if you have limited screen space).
The title-bar of the window you see indicates the build-date of the version you are using. The menus you see are similar to those you would see in any desktop application, if a little more sparse. The toolbar shown has 4 buttons on it, to provide the following:
| New Plot | To create a new, blank plot | |
| Open Plot | To re-open an existing plot | |
| Close Plot | To close the current plot | |
| Exit | To exit Debrief |
The Session window is broken down into three areas. The black-painted right-hand of the screen is named the Plot, the left-hand side is split into two areas: at the top is a set of toolbars used to control Debrief, whilst at the bottom is an area used to display a number of different property windows - the Tote is the window currently displayed
Note that the toolbars are on separate tabs, grouped as follows:
| File | Commands related to loading/saving data, and performing operations which result in file output | |
| View | Commands which change/refresh the current view, but which do not make any changes to the data itself | |
| Chart Features | Commands which add chart-related features to the plot, features which are not tactical or exercise-generated data, but which provide a "backdrop" to this data | |
| Drawing | Commands which add new tactical or exercise-related features to the plot. |
